Cutting Fruit – Cooking Activity for Kids * ages 4+

Cutting Fruit 🍉 ages 4+ 🍌My boys LOVE to help out in the kitchen! From measuring to seasoning to cutting they want to do it all. Here is a fun way to get them introduced to cutting with a knife.

Materials needed (affiliate links):

Kids knife (or a butter knife would work)

Cutting board

Banana

Watermelon

We started with a peeled banana as it’s really soft and easy to cut. I instructed Oliver to hold the fruit with his less dominant hand (right) to keep it in place, then carefully cut straight down with his dominant hand (he’s a lefty). I also reminded him to keep his fingers out of the way of the knife when holding the fruit. Once he had cut most of the banana, I encouraged him to eat the last piece!

Then he moved on to the watermelon. I cut the watermelon into long rectangular pieces as this gave him something to hold onto and made it more manageable to cut. He happily went to work cutting it up and even snuck a few pieces!

Finally once all the fruit was cut, Oliver made a fruit sandwich with bananas for the ends and watermelon in the middle. Yum! Such a great fine motor activity and building an important life skill!
