Awesome DIY LEGO Storage Containers

If your house is anything like ours, it contains about 20 various boxes and bins of LEGO partially built sets, figurines and mixtures of small and large pieces. The bigger problem is that my boys had totally stopped playing with LEGOs and I really wanted to get them back into creating and playing again. I also wanted something simple to make as I’m not very crafty and don’t have much time to build something. My boys also love tools and construction sets so I combined both concepts with these two DIY LEGO storage ideas.

Check out the below video to see how easily we built two great DIY LEGO organizers!

We’ve partnered with Creative QT to show you some simple ideas for organizing all those loose LEGO pieces into a self-contained, beautifully organized play area by adding Peel ‘n Stick Baseplates.

Big Red Tool Chest

Awesome DIY Lego Storage Tool Chest

Materials Needed to build a DIY LEGO Organizer Tool Chest:

  • Tool Chest – We found this beautiful Craftsman Tool Chest on Amazon. You can get one here: https://amzn.to/2JN0d6p
  • One 4-pack of Peel ‘n Stick Baseplates in red. Get the plates here: http://shrsl.com/1551o-1r0s-q9pj and get 30% off by using code “RAISINGDRAGONS”.  You can also get the baseplates on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/2U9lxdP
  • If you need some LEGOs in all the bright colors (We had a plethora of grey, brown and black, but few bright colors.), you can get a nice set of colorful LEGO bricks here: https://amzn.to/2RC9JvD

What to do:

1. Now simply peel off the cover on the back of the red baseplates and stick them onto the inside of the top cover and on the bottom of the top storage container.

2. Add all the colorful LEGOs to the drawers. We sorted the LEGOs by color and I find this really helps the boys when they are building their creations.
3. That’s it! Add a big bow and you have a perfect gift!

Portable Multi-Level Organizer

Awesome DIY Lego Storage Organizer

Materials Needed to make the DIY LEGO Portable Multi-level Organizer:

  • This portable tool organizer is a much less expensive option that the tool chest above, but I have to say, I think my boys play with this one even more! They love to open and close the lid and carry it around.  I also love it because it has lots of small compartments so we have organized all the tiny parts and lego people in this handy container. You can get the organizer here: https://amzn.to/2RxLAX0
  • One 4-pack of Peel ‘n Stick Baseplates in grey. Get the plates here: http://shrsl.com/1551o-1r0s-q9pj and get 30% off by using code “RAISINGDRAGONS”
  • If you need more LEGO building bricks, I would recommend this set: https://amzn.to/2RC9JvD
  • A craft knife (to cut the base plate down about an inch on each side)

What to do:

1. To add a baseplate to the top of the organizer, it will need to be cut down by about an inch so that it fits perfectly on the raised part of the lid of the organizer. Start by laying the baseplate on top of the organizer so you can see just how much the plate needs to be trimmed.

2. Lay some legos down in a line of where you want to cut the edges down.

3. Use a craft knife or cutting device to cut down the gray baseplate on each side. Here’s an article that shows the step-by-step process: https://creativeqt.net/blogs/news/how-to-cut-our-peel-n-stick-baseplates-to-size.
4. Once the baseplate has been resized, peel off the cover on the back of the baseplate and stick the baseplate to the clear top of the organizer.

5. Now load up all the compartments with LEGOs and you are good to go!

I love this DIY LEGO organizer for storing all the smaller pieces and figurines. It’s also great as it can be closed up and easily carried throughout your house or brought along on trips!

What I love most about both of these ideas is that they would make great gifts for the holidays! What boy or girl who loves LEGOs wouldn’t enjoy waking up on Christmas morning to one of these beautiful sets!
