We love sensory activities in our house and for each season I always try to do a themed sensory bag (Monsters for Halloween, Rainbows for Spring, Snowmen for Winter). For Christmastime I created this Christmas Tree Letters Sensory Bag so my little guys can practice learning letters and spelling while celebrating the season!

Materials Needed to make a Christmas Tree Letters Sensory Bag:

  • Gallon resealable freezer bag
  • Rubbing Alcohol (optional)
  • Cotton Ball (optional)
  • Black permanent marker
  • Hair gel or Hand Sanitizer
  • Green food coloring
  • Mini-erasers (letters and star) – We found these awesome letter mini-erasers at Target.
  • 2 googly eyes
  • Painter’s tape

How to make a Christmas Tree Letters Sensory Bag:

  1. OPTIONAL: remove any printing on the freezer bag by taking some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and rubbing it over the print.  It will wipe right off.
  2. Take a black permanent marker and draw the shape of an evergreen tree on the outside of the bag.
  3. Take about a cup of hair gel or hand sanitizer and add it to the bag.  If the gel is clear, add a few drops of green food coloring and mix.
  4. Add some letter mini-erasers, 2 googly eyes  and a star mini-eraser to the bag.
  5. Place the tree drawing side of the bag face down on the table. This will prevent the drawing from being rubbed off while using.
  6. Seal the bag by laying it flat on the table and removing as much air as possible before sealing.
  7. Finally, use painters tape to tape all sides of the bag to a light colored table or surface.

The bag is now ready to be played with!  Move the letters, eyes and stars around with your fingers to decorate the tree.  For Kindergarteners, move the letters around to make words on your tree!  For preschoolers, have them identify letters they see or colors.
