Sand Writing Tray * ages 2-6 * Drawing Letters in the Sand

Sand Writing Tray 💚 ages 3-5 💙 Sensory writing trays are such a fun way to get kids learning letters, shapes and numbers. My 5 year old has really responded to this method of learning so I wanted to mix it up and try using sand as our medium in a writing tray.  In this version, Oliver practiced his letters using blue sand and his finger. So fun!

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR A SAND WRITING TRAY (affiliate links):

Small tray (ours came as part of a set)

Blue Sand (or choose your favorite color)

Index cards

Black letter stickers

SET UP YOUR SAND WRITING TRAY:

1. Start by pouring some sand into a small tray.

2. Then make flash cards using blank index cards and either writing letters on the cards or using black stickers like the ones we found.

That’s it!  Now, show the child a flash card and ask them to draw the letter in the sand using their index finger.  It’s important to stress proper letter formation so when they practice writing with a pencil the formation will be correct there as well.
