I love finding new ways for my 2 & 6-year-olds to work on their fine motor skills and this winter-themed fine motor box made for a good hour of fun! The beautiful box we used is from FabFitFun, more about them later, but any box with an attached lid would work well.
MATERIALS NEEDED (affiliate links):
1. Box with attached lid
2. Painters tape (or any tape would work, but painters tape is easily removable and doesn’t damage the box)
3. Empty paper towel rolls
4. Scissors
5. Paint sponge (optional)
6. White paint (optional)
7. Hook & loop sticker dot sets
8. Pom poms (or any small objects like little toys, bouncy balls or even aluminum foil rolled up into balls)
9. Packing peanuts (optional – the kind we use are biodegradable)
10. Kids tongs
WHAT TO DO:
1. Start by taping the sides of the box lid to the edge of the bottom to keep the lid in place.
2. Cut the paper towel rolls into 2-3 inch sections.
3. Paint the rolls white and let dry. This is optional but we thought it added to the winter feel of the box.
4. Then apply the hook & loop dots to the box lid and the other end to the rolls.
5. Add some pom poms and small objects like packing peanuts to the bottom of the box.
6. Stick the rolls onto the lid. We added some extra dots tot he box lid so the rolls can be moved around and reconfigured to make new paths.
7. Give the child a pair of tongs and have them pick up the pom poms and drop them into the rolls.
This was a huge hit with my boys and entertained them for a good 45 minutes! And the best part is that the box can easily be packed up and stored for fun at a later time! Just remove the painters tape and close the box with all the pieces inside!
