DIY Dragon Eggs * ages 2+

Dying Easter eggs is a family tradition in our house. Every year, my boys can’t wait to start the process of getting all the dyes out and dipping the eggs to make all the beautifully colored eggs. This year, when I told my boys we were going to make DIY dragon eggs instead of regular Easter eggs they got so excited they could hardly contain themselves. They are totally obsessed with dragons so the thought of making eggs that looked like dragon eggs had them totally stoked. Sometimes giving a new twist to a classic activity can really take it to the next level and this is one example where it does! Did I mention they are SO SIMPLE to make!!  You will definitely want to give these a try!

What to do to make DIY Dragon Eggs:

  1. Start by hard boiling the eggs (we brought the water to a boil and then continued to boil for 10 minutes).
  2. Then drain the water and rinse the eggs in cold water until they are cool to the touch.
  3. Next prepare your dye bowls. Add the eggs to the cups, then added plain water so you know exactly how much water each cup needs. Then remove the eggs, added 4-8 drops of food coloring and mix the color in.DIY Dragon Eggs DIY Dragon Eggs
  4. Now for the MOST IMPORTANT STEP: To give the eggs that cool dragon egg effect, lightly tap the eggs on the table until small cracks and breaks form throughout the egg. Once all the cracks have formed add the eggs to the bowls of colored water.
  5. Let the eggs sit for about 3 hours.
  6. Finally, remove the eggs from the water, dry them off and gently remove the shells. You will notice that some of the dye was able to get through the cracks of the egg creating this cool effect!

And the best part is that the eggs can be eaten! My boys dipped them in a little salt. So fun!
